Introductions:

The introductions fostered a sense of community, with attendees emphasizing the importance of collaboration and resource sharing to support the homeless population effectively.

The Executive Director of the Stanwood Community Food Bank shared insights into using the Grabill building for programs during the winter months but could be shared during this time and used other times of the year.  The Food Bank does not want to create a new program but would be willing to enter into an agreement with another organization to use this space.

The discussion then shifted to the need for facilities that include laundry and shower services for community members, considering both current limitations and potential mobile solutions. The Coalition also addressed the complexities of different buildings and the relationship with neighboring businesses regarding shared space usage. Additionally, a secure mail distribution system for individuals without identified addresses was proposed, referencing a successful model from Everett.

The meeting concluded with discussions on developing a resource hub to assist the unhoused and those at risk of losing their homes, emphasizing the need for city approval and funding sources. It highlighted the rising number of homeless families in Stanwood, underscoring the urgency for support. The conversation also touched on the importance of creating welcoming spaces for individuals in crisis, the need for expanded shelter options, and the protocols for sharing client information. A follow-up meeting was scheduled for December to continue these critical discussions.

Discussion on Space Utilization for Laundry and Showers:

Coalition led a discussion on the necessity of incorporating laundry and shower facilities into a community space, emphasizing the need for confidentiality. Participants noted the current limitations of the space, which only includes a toilet and sink, and explored options for mobile laundry and shower services. The conversation also touched on the challenges families face in accessing existing laundromat services.

Parking and Space Utilization Discussion:

Coalition detailed the separate accounting for various buildings and the complexities of the property layout, including limited street parking and shared parking lot ownership with a neighboring business. The discussion also touched on the potential for future installations, such as a bathroom or laundry trailer, and the importance of maintaining good relationships with local businesses for effective communication and space sharing.

Mail Distribution for Individuals with Unidentified Addresses:

The coalition outlined a proposed mail distribution system for individuals lacking proper addresses, inspired by a method used in Everett. The plan includes a secure area where mail is sorted and made accessible to recipients, who would need to present identification to collect their mail. Coalition emphasized the importance of having a manager on-site to assist individuals in understanding their mail and next steps.

Food Bank Space Utilization and Strategic Planning:

Coalition highlighted the food bank's current rental situation and the necessity of establishing an entity to manage the proposed changes. They mentioned the Healing Connections Center as a potential overseer and noted the importance of securing funding, with estimates ranging from $150,000 to $200,000 for renovations. The coalition has seed money available, but additional grants will be needed.

Community Resources and Homelessness Discussion:

Coalition highlighted the need for community involvement in addressing homelessness, mentioning the upcoming meeting with church leaders to explore potential partnerships. They noted the importance of presenting accurate data on homelessness, as many community members may not recognize the extent of the issue. It was added that the number of homeless families in Stanwood is at an all-time high, with many families struggling due to economic challenges.

Project Timeline and Resource Allocation Discussion:

Coalition discussed the potential for utilizing a building space as early as January 2025, contingent on community development and legal approvals. He mentioned having reserves from a previous building sale, indicating that funding should not be a major obstacle. Coalition estimated that the project could realistically pick up momentum by the end of 2025.

Discussion on Shelter and Waiting Space Needs:

Coalition advocated for a waiting area with chairs and a space for food to support individuals arriving in crisis. The need for an expansion of Coldweather Shelter was also mentioned, as current options are limited and only available under specific temperature conditions.

Information Sharing and Referral Systems:

Coalition highlighted the necessity of establishing safe spaces for community services and suggested including this in the agenda. They also addressed the importance of proper information-sharing protocols among agencies, particularly concerning the CARES program at the Camano, to ensure client confidentiality and effective follow-up.

Action Items:

  • Food Bank will coordinate with local businesses to discuss the possibility of sharing space and resources.

  • Coalition will explore the potential for mobile showers and laundry facilities at the Food Bank's property.

  • Coalition will draft a proposal for the coalition to present to the board regarding the resource hub.

  • Coalition will investigate funding opportunities and grants for the reworking of the space.
