Summary:

The unhoused workgroup convened to discuss the progress and future initiatives to address homelessness in the community. Attendees shared personal introductions and experiences, fostering a collaborative atmosphere. The facilitator provided a recap of the group's development over the past year, highlighting the involvement of various community organizations and emphasizing the importance of ongoing collaboration. 

The Executive Director of the Community Resource Center (CRC) presented (see slide deck) the organization's mission to create a collaborative resource hub for homelessness services, focusing on improving access and reducing barriers for unhoused individuals. She discussed potential locations for the hub and the necessity of securing funding and community input. She states that two locations are currently being looked at to house the Resource Hub. The group acknowledged the need for dignified spaces and discussed the potential for mobile services to enhance support for clients.


The meeting concluded with plans for future engagement and the continuation of monthly meetings. The facilitator confirmed the next meeting date of May 8 @ 10am. A desire for training in de-escalation and Poverty 101 was discussed. The group expressed enthusiasm for upcoming opportunities to collaborate and improve services.

  • Overview of Resource Hub Development

    • ED from the CRC introduced the organization's mission and outlined the importance of a collaborative effort to tackle homelessness. She described the proposed resource hub as a one-stop location for various support services, aiming to create an inclusive and trauma-informed environment. Key goals include improving access, fostering partnerships, and ensuring sustainability in addressing community needs.

    • Challenges and opportunities related to potential locations for the resource hub.

    • Future training opportunities for workgroup members and volunteers.


  • Discussion on Facilities and Services for Unhoused Individuals

    • Workgroup addressed the challenges associated with the Grabill building, particularly its lack of parking and space for services like mobile showers. The discussion emphasized the need for dignity in service provision, suggesting that indoor showers would be preferable. The facilitator also mentioned the potential for mobile laundry services and the importance of consulting clients about their preferences.


  • Discussion on Grabill Building and Parking Solutions

    • The facilitator highlighted the challenges of the Grabill building's location, including limited parking due to nearby businesses like Sahara Pizza.  A proposed development of a communication plan for local businesses. The Green building was discussed and the potential for the parking area to serve as an overnight shelter, addressing the community's need for safe parking and resources.


  • Fundraising and Community Engagement Strategies

    • Cold Weather Shelter highlighted the importance of inclusivity in the team's efforts, thanking them for considering the contributions of all involved. They proposed utilizing a community festival in July as a fundraising opportunity, suggesting a setup with a thermometer to track fundraising goals. It was noted that the success of previous events, mentioning that $25,000 was raised last year.


  • Storage Solutions and Community Collaboration

    • It was mentioned the urgency of relocating a washer and dryer from storage, and proposed sorting items at Grabill. The group explored the benefits of the Sunrise building, which offers office space and facilities for client services, including a kitchen and bathroom. There was enthusiasm about the possibilities for community support and collaboration.


  • Updates and Planning for Cold Weather Shelter

    • The facilitator announced that the group will meet again on May 8th. The group also plans to discuss improvements and training opportunities for volunteers during the next meeting.
